As one learns of the fate of children around the world one wonders if there is not a very real connection between the neglect of at risk children in America and the neglect of children around the world. What is the difference between the fate of a young gang banger Chicago and the fate of a child soldier in the Congo?
As of January 2010 we could easily substitute the country of Haiti. As rebels in Libya appear to wrap up their conflict in 2011 an environmental and human crisis is once again raging in Somalia. But which one will be covered by the media as violence? Are we asleep or have we lost our bearings?
Why haven’t we made the connection that poverty and neglect = violence. Would we be more offended by the potential of global warming if we recognized that climate change is tantamount to child abuse. If the next generation can make that connection I believe there may be hope for the future of the planet and its children.
