Introduction:
This poem and song is sole property of the children who have inspired it by losing their lives due to our ignorance, neglect and violence. They have requested that it may only be used for the purpose of supporting causes which seek to improve the quality of life for children at risk. Please respect their wishes.
It serves as a reminder that we do not love our own children enough if we do not love the children of other parents as much as we love our own. When we have passed away it is our children who will need to live with one another. Will our generation leave the earth, with children who will be able to live with one another in peace and joy?
In 1995, I became the optic fiber for this message. After reading the tragic story of an 11 year old by the name of Robert Sandman who lived and died in the hands of neglect and gun violence at such a tender age, I could not sleep for many nights with out hearing the voices of both the frightened monster and the brave victim in all one and the same child. It is the ghost of such a child that speaks to me in the poem and calls me to action. I regret that the ’ground 0′ of gun rage has fallen to the age of 6 since that time.
I am obligated to pass it on to others who can take the words farther to make a difference in the world. Please use with care.
A simple homemade recording of the poem sung with piano is available for artist who would like to work with the poem. It is only a sample of one possible melody a the simplest chords that I was able to come up with (not being a pianist or guitar player). I have found myself adapting the poetry to different situations and people by changing the pronouns and the geographic regions.
Today we could be talking about Darfur, Somalia, Iraq, Afghanistan or Haiti. Since this was written before the Internet fully amplified itself we could also be referring to other media services, not just the TV or new magazine.
